At Aesthetic Code we have hailed the benefits of Vitamin C for skin health. But with so many to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you? Lets begin with the benefits of Vitamin C and why it should be a staple in your skin regime.
The appearance of our skin generally reflects the health and efficacy of its underlying structures. It's fundamental role is to provide a protective interface between the external environment and as such is where the visible signs of ageing occur. We have come to learn that high concentrations of Vitamin C in the skin indicates that it has a number of important functions that are relevant to skin health.
Research indicates that aged and photo-damaged skin has lower levels of Vitamin C. Introducing a topical Vitamin C will provide the all important antioxidant protection which helps to brighten skin and fade hyper-pigmentation by blocking melanin production. It fights free radical damage from environmental stressors and is essential for the synthesis of collagen, reducing the signs of ageing. It's effectiveness increases when combined with other antioxidants, such as vitamin E. Together they can double protection against free-radical damage.
How to use Vitamin C
Vitamin C should be used in the morning because of its antioxidant properties, which means that it helps to defend against pollutants and free radicals that could otherwise damage skin throughout the day. It is best to start slow, you only need a few drops for each application and we recommend start with a low concentration and work your way up. You may experience some mild tingling initially, therefore you may begin applying every other day and if tolerated apply daily. Let the product absorb into your skin, before you go out into the sun and follow with moisturiser and sunscreen.
Consideration when choosing a Vitamin C
The challenge lies in finding the most stable and permeable formulation in achieving the optimal results. You will notice that no serum bottles are clear and this is because when exposed to light or air Vitamin C breaks down and therefore effects its stability. And of course, any questions about finding the right Vitamin C product for your individual skin type and concerns, we can help when you book for a complimentary skincare consultation at our clinic.
Who should not use a Vitamin C?
There have only been clinical studies to support the use in adults, therefore Vitamin C is not recommended for children. If you have sensitivity or known allergies to any of the ingredients, you should do a patch test or consult with your skin specialist. If you experience discomfort or irritation, you must stop using vitamin C and consult with one of our skin specialists. There are alternative options we can recommend.
